Handmade Monday 141

Hello and welcome to Handmade Monday.

My granddaughter Keira tells me we have to start making something else soon, as we've made too many cushions!

Her bedroom is now apparently full to bursting with cushions.  I think we made so many as they are a perfect project to help a beginner to get used to a sewing machine - with quick and happy results!  The gorgeous fabric on this one was from Wholeport.  I used it for my sketchpad pouch, and Keira pounced on the leftovers for her latest cushion!!

But what next?

Any ideas?  I think we still need to keep it fairly quick and simple, but perhaps she's ready to step it up a gear!

In the meantime, it's getting busy here with orders over at my 1st Unique Gifts site.  Is it getting busy for you too?  If you have time...

What a clever girl for making all those cushions! I love cushions myself, can you ever have too many? :)

What about making some Christmas decorations? Or a phone cosy? x

Cushions are a great starter project as they are so lovely to have afterwards! How about a tote bag? I have a link on this week's blog to the one I used and she could start by making it in large fabric pieces and maybe move on to a patchwork one for a second one?

Well done Keira on making such lovely cushions.

Why not try bag making as there are many styles to suit all different abilities.

A girl can never have too many bags... xx

What a lucky girl Kiera is to have a Grandma willing and able to help her make such lovely cushions :)

Well done on making all those cushions, as mentioned above, a tote bag would be good or maybe a diary/notebook cover :) I'm sure it will be lovely whatever she chooses.

I love that fabric. And I really like the edge detail on the cushion - I haven't ever tried that before. The problem with looking for a new project is that there are often too many to choose from I think!

The cushion looks great Keira (and Grandma)! I agree with some of the other people who've commented that a simple bag would be a good next project!

I second the tote bag idea. It's more of the straight lines she's used to but can be as complicated as you like with linings and pouches and pockets etc.

Looks like she'll be able to handle it.

YAY go Keira cushions are great to make and each looks different depending on the fabric. I've been teaching a couple of ladies how to make cushions. Last week we made brooches with ribbon and lace sewn onto felt.

Lovely cushion. How about a simple lap quilt, maybe to match the cushion if there is enough fabric?

How lovely to be sewing with your granddaughter. I love the fabric you have used.

Lots of lovely ideas from you all - thank you! I forgot to mention she made a tote bag (a book bag for school) but maybe more bags would be good. I love the idea of a phone cosy, so that could go on the list. I don't think we'll get much sewing in before Christmas, unfortunately, so it probably won't be xmas decs!

I love the fabric for the cushion. Perhaps she could try a simple skirt next (with elastic on the waist) or a pencil case (maybe without a zip). She's very lucky to have someone to make things with.

Love this cushion. I don't understand the concept of having too many cushions!

It's great that you're teaching your granddaughter to sew - something I'm sure she'll treasure and use for many years to come. How about making a pencil case, purse or make up bag next? Just something simple and square, though she may need help with the zip!

You can never have too many cushions! But if she wanted to make something different, how about start on Christmas Stockings? They could be as simple or as complicated (with lining) as you want them to be and the best thing is you can make them all to look different and personalise them.

Cushions are a great starter, and how about some with appliqued items on them? Christmas trees, flowers, etc could be a nice next step. Hope you have a good week.

There's definitely no such thing as too many cushions ;) You've got such lovely fabric, what about a frilly pinny for warming yourselves up on baking days in this cold weather? I made mine from an old pair of curtains and it makes me happy everytime I wear it :) Have a great week! x
