Free Sewing Class and Shoe Fabric!

I know a lot of people are really getting into sewing these days.  One of my daughters is teaching herself quite a lot with her new (to her, anyway) sewing machine (I'm impressed with her creative skills so far).  And my 10-year-old granddaughter Keira is really excited about learning to sew.  She's made lots of cushions and a snuggle bag already but wants to move on to making bags.

I mention this because I just found a brilliant free video class on Craftsy that teaches you how to make a tote bag.  I've downloaded the video and I'm going to get my daughter and granddaughter to watch it.  Maybe they can even have a bit of auntie/niece bonding over it!

On the bag theme, Keira has plans to make a shoe bag - with a shoe print fabric (above and below)  The fabric is just amazing, and one metre gets you enough to make a few bags.

the fabric is wide, and the print is sideways on to the selvedge
(in the image above, the selvedges are top and bottom) so there's plenty
(there's a 12" ruler at the side of the fabric to help scale the photo)

But I like the idea of a hanging panel too - the wording on the fabric just lends itself to something you could put on a wall!

welcome to my house!

You may remember my dotty denim from this post - it's from Wholeport like the shoe print fabric.  I have more plans for this denim - I want some oven mitts from it and also a cushion.  Unfortunately, I did waste some of it when I got my photo frame wrong when I was experimenting with a design, so I don't have as much as I'd like.  I may have to order some more, or maybe I'll back the cushion with something else.  Either way, I do officially love my dotty denim!  It's quite soft for a denim fabric, and I can imagine it would work for all sorts of things - including bags.  I can imagine it with a brilliant red or bright floral print lining.

It's busy here so all these plans will be put into action sometime in 2013, which isn't too far away...

Yay! A Little Excited...

My sewing kit tutorial has been on Craftsy as a free downloadable tutorial for a while now.  I've been getting daily emails from Craftsy telling me how many people downloaded it today...

6 people, 8 people, 2 people, 15 people, 5 people ...

that's how it's been going and that's been quite nice.  I figured a free download might be helpful in getting my name known once I start actually selling patterns properly (yup, it's on the to-do list!).

But this morning I opened an email telling me 175 people had downloaded the tutorial in one day.  Maybe it's been featured somewhere on their home page or something... but now it's #1 on Craftsy's free sewing patterns.

Er, wow!

I'm completely blown away by this.  There are so many brilliant patterns on there (even in the free section) that I can't quite believe this has happened.

If anyone knows what has suddenly made it so popular, please do let me know by leaving a comment.  Thanks so much.

OK, am off to do a few excited cartwheels around the garden...

Hmmm...OK, maybe not.  It's been raining heavily, you see (nothing to do with my age, you understand).

Craftsy - Where Have You Been All My Life?

This was one of those links I clicked on somewhere ... and then I got so engrossed I can't remember which website took me there.

Craftsy, I'm in awe!  Seriously, where have you been all my life?

I'm quite excited, because Craftsy seems to have everything sewn up (groan!) for the crafter.  Classes, courses, patterns, tutorials.  I shall definitely be exploring more once I've got time, but for now I will be concentrating on getting a few patterns together so I can list them on Craftsy.

I'm working on this at the moment

I'm also guessing that all the things I have lined up (in my head) to learn about will all be on there somewhere.

I am officially quite excited! (OK, I know, maybe I should get out more...)

If you'd like to find patterns, sell patterns, take online classes or learn stuff, pop over there! You don't have to get as excited as me about it.  But you might do - you have been warned.
